We have revised and updated the format of the department review. This new version utilizes a software suite that the university has licensed to improve access to data. For instance, a variety of linked icons at the bottom allow you to tell the report to do things like remember your current settings, download the data in an Excel format, or share the data link with a colleague. If you see something that we can do to improve the report or data that does not look correct, please contact us directly.

Please be aware: historically, Department Reviews only included data for degree granting departments. Interdisciplinary programs, while degree granting, were excluded due to their shared resource allocations and funding. Now that we have added the ability to roll these programs up at the college level, we will work to include this data as quickly as possible. But, please be aware that the current college totals may not represent the full dataset of all areas within the college.

The numbers calculated and shown on these dashboards may not be calculated using the same methodology that is used in generating counts related to the budget model. Please contact the budget office for official counts used in the budget model.

Excluded Units

This report does not include the School of Medicine. Please contact the Institutional Analysis office at (801) 581-6135 if you need information specific to the School of Medicine.

Faculty Headcount

Only a faculty’s primary appointment is included in the analysis. All appointments are reported from November 1 employment and faculty appointment data.

Faculty headcount is based on degree information gathered from the employee’s bio-demographic file. Faculty Degrees represent highest degree awarded per faculty member. Please note: not all departments have input their faculty’s degree information into PeopleSoft. If information is missing, or if the instructor does not have a degree at the time of our download, it will not reflect the total headcount for a department.

Cost Study

This is an analysis of the Instructional Costs for a twelve month period (fiscal year of July 1 to June 30) per the NACUBO classification for direct instructional expenditures. NACUBO defined classifications are assigned by General Accounting to each activity.

  • Direct Instructional Expenditures are the sum total of all activities in Fund 1001 (State Appropriations) under the classification of “Instruction” per the NACUBO definitions.
  • Cost per Student FTE figures are the sum total of Direct Instructional Expenditures divided by sum total of Department Undergraduate and Graduate FTE. (Information regarding FTE calculations is shown below under the Student Credit Hours and FTE section)

FTE from Cost Study

  • Number of faculty FTE’s supported by Appropriated Instructional Funding.
  • FTE allocated to the instructor of record for a credit bearing course during fall term.
  • Faculty with administrative appointments are excluded.
  • Full time are tenure/tenure track faculty or instructors with >=.75 FTE.
  • Part time are auxiliary faculty with an FTE less than .75.


  • Total Grants – All fund 5000 Instruction, Research, Public Service, Academic Support, Student Service, Institutional Support, Operation, Scholarship and Other accounts
  • Appropriated Funds – All funding from State Appropriations (fund 1001) including BASE allocations, productivity funds, centrally funded employee benefits, and allocations from fund 1001 central administration funding commitments.
  • Teaching Grants – All Projects (fund 5000) that are classified according to the NACUBO definition of Instructional Funding.
  • * Please Note: State Appropriated Funds, Differential Tuition and Special Legislative Appropriations may be transferred to recipients’ Deans Offices, at the College level and thus may not be included on individual Department totals. In these situations the College Dean may contact the Budget Office to provide distribution detail at the Department Level if that information is desired to be reflected as such on this report.

Student Credit Hours and FTE

  • Annualized FTE Students: Calculated by dividing the student’s attempted for credit hours during a 12-month period (summer, fall, spring semesters) by 30 for an undergraduate student and by 20 for a graduate student.
  • Courses attributed to AOCE are not included.
  • FTE per Total Faculty FTE: FTE from undergraduate and graduate level courses divided by sum total of instructional FTE from the Cost Study section above (excluding Teaching Assistants).

Enrolled Majors

  • Students matriculated and enrolled in specified program based on fall enrollment data only.
  • Enrolled Major count taken from Fall Census data extract.
  • Only primary major is counted (earliest, still active declared major in PeopleSoft)

Degrees Awarded

All degrees and certificates awarded during the specified academic year (July 1 – June 30).
